Aaron Nola is nearing a return to the Philadelphia Phillies’ rotation as he prepares for a Minor League rehab assignment. The veteran pitcher has been sidelined since May due to right ankle and rib injuries. On Friday, Nola threw a three-inning live batting practice session at Yankee Stadium, totaling 56 pitches.
The Phillies plan for Nola to begin his rehab with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, although the date of his first outing is yet to be determined. He will likely have another bullpen session before starting the assignment. The goal is for Nola to reach 90 pitches before rejoining the major league team, beginning with 55-60 pitches in his initial rehab game and increasing by 15 pitches each subsequent outing.
Phillies manager Rob Thomson expressed confidence in Nola’s abilities, stating, “When he’s on, he’s one of the best pitchers in the game.” Despite not pitching in an MLB game since May 14 due to injuries, Nola remains optimistic about his recovery process.
Nola’s absence hasn’t hindered Philadelphia’s rotation significantly this season, as it continues to perform well with contributions from Zack Wheeler, Cristopher Sánchez, and Ranger Suárez. However, as the team competes for the National League East title, they are eager for Nola’s return.
Reflecting on his time away from pitching and looking forward to returning soon, Nola said: “I’m just happy the rehab process is going smoothly… I’m ready to get back out there.”
