Andrea Califano, a prominent figure in systems biology, has been awarded the Stanley P. Reimann Honor Award by Fox Chase Cancer Center. This accolade is the center’s highest honor.
“It is my privilege to present this award on behalf of our entire Fox Chase community to Dr. Califano,” said Cancer Center Director. “A pioneer in cancer genetics and cancer biology, Dr. Califano is internationally recognized for his work in the reverse engineering of gene regulatory networks and analyzing such networks to identify key tumor checkpoint modules.”
Califano holds multiple positions including Clyde and Helen Wu Professor at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, President of Chan Zuckerberg Biohub New York, and Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Advisor at DarwinHealth Inc.
He is an elected fellow of several prestigious organizations such as the American Association for Cancer Research and the National Academy of Medicine since 2018.
The Reimann Honor Award acknowledges individuals who have significantly contributed to cancer research. It was established in 1974 in memory of Stanley P. Reimann, MD, founder of the Institute for Cancer Research which later became part of Fox Chase Cancer Center.
Califano’s laboratory has been crucial in identifying new biomarkers for cancers like glioma and leukemia/lymphoma. His research has led to clinical trials focusing on precision medicine by prioritizing therapies for patients with untreatable cancers.
In addition to his research contributions, Califano serves as a scientific editor for various journals and advisory boards including those associated with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
His career includes numerous accolades such as the Alfred G. Knudson Award in 2023 from NCI, Ruth Leff Siegel Award in 2019, and NCI Outstanding Investigator Awards in 2015 and 2022.
Fox Chase has honored a diverse group with the Reimann Award since its inception, all united by their commitment to combating cancer. Califano joins this distinguished group as one of 18 recipients since 1974.
