Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Andrew Painter drew attention on April 14 for his performance against the Arizona Diamondbacks, despite starting the day with a severe migraine and nausea. According to pitching coach Caleb Cotham, “The last game is a really good example of the whole show. How to handle pain, the ability to handle things, the ability to handle information, to go out and pitch and compete. He’s still in some ways a kid. I mean that in a great way. There’s joy. He’s playing a game… But then you have a game where he’s sick and literally throwing up, and he just stayed steady. That’s really hard to do.”

Painter pitched five innings during that outing, allowing three hits and one run while striking out seven batters. The 23-year-old will make his third start—and fourth appearance—of his Major League Baseball career on Sunday night against Atlanta with an early record of 1-0 and an earned run average of 3.77 across his first three appearances.

Painter has demonstrated dedication beyond his time on the mound by staying in the dugout after being pulled from games—a practice not always common among starting pitchers—so he can observe teammates closely and learn from live action rather than television footage alone. “I’m just trying to get a feel for the game, try to learn a little bit while I’m out there… But I want to be out there. If they’re out there, I’ll be out there,” Painter said.

Veteran right-hander Aaron Nola discussed how important this habit was when he entered MLB: “I knew it was important when I first came up… Harang would always tell me, ‘Yeah, watching it on TV is good, but during the game you learn a lot more watching the game in the dugout.’” Cotham also commented on this approach: “If you’re not there… if you’re not locked into every pitch, you won’t ever get that feeling.”

Off-field routines are also part of Painter’s preparation; he throws footballs as part of his warm-up routine—a habit picked up during rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery—which Cotham noted with humor: “I mean, he throws a nice spiral… I think he’s a world-class punter too.”

The Philadelphia Phillies serve Philadelphia as well as regional and national fans through their participation in Major League Baseball according to their official website. The team plays home games at Citizens Bank Park—a stadium they have used since 2004—and has previously won World Series titles in both 1980 and 2008 according to their official website. As one of Major League Baseball’s National League charter members according to their official website, executive leadership oversees operations for both team performance and community engagement.
