Phillies right-hander Andrew Painter pitched at loanDepot park for the first time on May 2, but struggled with command in a 4-0 loss to the Marlins, which ended Philadelphia’s four-game winning streak under interim manager Don Mattingly. Painter allowed seven hits, three runs and three walks over five innings while striking out seven.

The matchup drew attention because Painter grew up in South Florida and was pitching before family and friends. The game also featured two former first-round draft picks: Painter, selected by the Phillies with the 13th overall pick in the 2021 Draft, and Max Meyer of the Marlins, picked third overall in 2020. Meyer delivered a dominant performance for Miami, holding Philadelphia to one hit over seven scoreless innings.

Painter said after the game that he struggled to escape jams early on. “They’ve been close,” Painter said. “Today, I just shot myself in the foot.” He added that his tempo felt rushed: “I think it was pretty up-tempo, pretty quick. I think in that situation, just got to slow down a little bit and think through the glove…”

Meyer’s outing overshadowed Painter’s debut at his hometown stadium as he struck out seven batters and allowed only one walk and one hit—a single by Garrett Stubbs—while Kyle Schwarber struck out eight consecutive times across two games. Mattingly commented on Meyer’s competitiveness: “He’s competitive… you know, a guy with good stuff and competitive is a pretty good combo, right?” Regarding Schwarber’s struggles at bat during this series against Miami Mattingly said: “Maybe he’s not seeing the ball good here… but not a guy that you really worry about unless it gets extended.”

The Phillies have won World Series titles in both 1980 and 2008 according to their official website. The team represents Philadelphia in Major League Baseball (MLB) while engaging fans through games and community outreach according to their official website. Since 2004 they have played home games at Citizens Bank Park—a stadium spanning twenty-one acres according to their official website—and are led by executives including a chief executive officer and general manager who oversee operations according to their official website.

Serving both local fans from Philadelphia as well as regional and national audiences according to their official website, the Phillies are also recognized as charter members of MLB’s National League according to their official website.
