Several top Minor League Baseball prospects delivered strong performances this week as the trade deadline approached. Among them, Andrew Painter, the Philadelphia Phillies’ top prospect and ranked No. 8 overall by MLB, pitched into the seventh inning for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Painter allowed one run on seven hits and struck out four batters over 6 1/3 innings, marking his longest outing since September 2022. This season marks his return from Tommy John surgery, and he has now tallied 67 strikeouts in 68 Triple-A innings across 14 starts.
Other notable performances included Kevin Alcántara of the Iowa Cubs, who hit two home runs and drove in three runs, bringing his season total to 13 homers and an .819 OPS over 79 games. Detroit Tigers’ prospect Kevin McGonigle recorded his first three-RBI game at Double-A Erie and continues to maintain a high level of production despite missing time with an ankle injury.
Christian Moore of the Los Angeles Angels began a rehab assignment with Single-A Inland Empire after being sidelined with a thumb sprain earlier this month. He notched two doubles and a walk in four plate appearances.
Toronto Blue Jays’ Arjun Nimmala had his most productive game in six weeks for High-A Vancouver, hitting a home run and collecting four RBIs. New York Mets prospect Jonah Tong continued to lead Minor League pitchers in strikeouts but struggled with command during his latest start for Binghamton.
Other pitching highlights included Cam Caminiti of Augusta posting back-to-back scoreless outings after returning from injury, Jackson Ferris finishing July with a strong stretch for Tulsa, Brody Brecht continuing his successful debut season with Fresno after missing time due to injury, and David Shields delivering another scoreless performance for Columbia.
The performances come as teams evaluate their prospects ahead of potential moves before Thursday’s trade deadline.
