Bryce Harper has reaffirmed his status as one of the top hitters in baseball. “I know when I’m going well, I’m one of the best in baseball,” Harper stated on July 9 in San Francisco after achieving four extra-base hits in a single game for the first time.
Harper’s recent remarks have sparked curiosity about his motives. Manager Rob Thomson acknowledged Harper’s talent, saying, “Although he is one of the best players in the game — so, he’s telling the truth.” Yet, Thomson admitted uncertainty about what Harper aims to convey with these statements.
Harper’s accolades include two MVP awards and eight All-Star selections. His career home run count stands at 349, with another milestone imminent. This season, Harper holds an .869 OPS, which has risen significantly since June.
Teammate Kyle Schwarber described this performance as “prime Bryce.” Harper expressed satisfaction with his current form: “I’m really happy where I am — healthy, strong.”
The Phillies’ performance appears linked to Harper’s success. They hold a 30-16 record when he gets a hit and are notably more successful when he homers or drives in runs.
Thomson emphasized the need for contributions from other players amid injuries and potential roster changes before the trade deadline. Harper himself stressed collective responsibility: “But we’ve got 26 guys in here that need to do the job every day.”
As discussions continue around potential trades and internal improvements, Harper remains central to Philadelphia’s ambitions.
