Bryce Harper is working to regain his form after a 25-day stint on the injured list. In Monday night’s game against the Giants at Oracle Park, Harper faced challenges at the plate. He struck out looking in the fifth inning and encountered questionable strike calls in the eighth, though he remained composed despite comments from the Phillies’ dugout directed at home-plate umpire Phil Cuzzi.
“I feel like anytime I complain, it’s pretty obvious. Right?” Harper said. “He knows he missed them.”
Harper finished 1-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout, batting .200 since returning from wrist inflammation. Despite this, Harper expressed confidence: “I felt confident today,” he said. “I felt really good where I was.”
Phillies manager Rob Thomson saw positive signs in Harper’s performance: “It looked normal,” he noted. “Balanced and a lot of bat speed.”
The Phillies struggled offensively, managing six hits and leaving seven runners on base. They have been hitless in their last 21 opportunities with runners in scoring position over three games.
“Obviously, that can’t happen,” Harper commented on their struggles with runners in scoring position.
Phillies left-hander Cristopher Sánchez delivered a strong performance, allowing one run over seven innings and maintaining a 2.59 ERA for the season.
“Obviously, our starting pitching has been lights-out,” Harper praised his teammates.
Manager Rob Thomson recently announced Zack Wheeler and Kyle Schwarber as NL All-Star team members but omitted Trea Turner and Sánchez, who both had noteworthy seasons.
Turner expressed his disappointment: “I’m a competitor… Just because it kind of justifies a little bit of having a good season.”
Sánchez also shared his surprise at not being selected: “I won’t lie, it got me by surprise.”
Both players remain hopeful for an All-Star call-up as player withdrawals are common.
Turner remarked on family support for such honors: “A lot of awards… are kind of for the people around me.”
Sánchez plans to use this as motivation: “That motivates me a lot,” he said about his team’s current hitting struggles.
