Congressman Dwight Evans, representing Pennsylvania’s 3rd district, recently addressed significant issues through a series of tweets. His comments covered topics from commemorating a tragic event to expressing concerns about healthcare policy impacts in Pennsylvania.
On June 17, 2025, Congressman Evans marked the tenth anniversary of a tragic shooting at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina. He stated: “Ten years ago today, nine lives were stolen from us in a hate-filled, racially motivated act of gun violence at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC.” He emphasized the need for action to honor the victims’ memory by addressing the “Charleston Loophole,” which allowed the perpetrator to obtain a firearm.
Later that day, Evans criticized budgetary decisions affecting healthcare. He tweeted: “This is not a game! People will lose their health care. Hospitals will close.” He highlighted potential negative impacts on Pennsylvania due to Medicaid cuts proposed by Trump and Congressional Republicans.
On June 18, 2025, Evans reflected on past hospital closures while warning against future risks under current proposals. In his tweet he recalled: “I still remember the devastating impact of the Hahnemann Hospital closure in Philly.” He expressed concern that similar outcomes could occur across urban and rural hospitals under what he termed as the GOP’s “#ReverseRobinHood budget.”
Dwight Evans has served in Congress since replacing Chaka Fattah in 2016. Before this role, he was part of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1981 to 2016. Born and raised in Philadelphia where he currently resides at age 68, Evans graduated from La Salle University with a BA degree.
