Congressman Dwight Evans, who represents Pennsylvania’s 3rd district in the U.S. Congress, has recently criticized Republican leadership over the ongoing government shutdown in a series of posts on his social media account.

On November 4, 2025, Evans called for immediate action from House leadership: “As I said at yesterday’s press conference- Speaker Johnson needs to reconvene the House after 46 days away and let us get back to work! Even if the Trump administration follows court orders and uses the SNAP contingency fund- it’s like putting 5 miles’ worth of gas in your tank”.

The following day, Evans urged constituents to advocate for increased funding for nutrition assistance programs: “Last night’s results show it’s time to put down the ballroom plans and pick UP the phone. Tell the USDA to FULLY fund November’s SNAP benefits – now. Then Mr. Art of the Deal should call House & Senate Democratic leaders to meet with him and NEGOTIATE an end to this shutdown.”

Later that same day, Evans attributed responsibility for the government shutdown to Republican lawmakers: “Republicans control the White House, the House, and the Senate. And because of their inaction and incompetence, we are in the longest shutdown in US history. America deserves better than this. It’s far past time for the House GOP to get back to voting session after 47 days and”.

Evans has represented Pennsylvania’s 3rd District since 2016 after replacing Chaka Fattah. He previously served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1981 until his election to Congress. Born in Philadelphia in 1954, Evans continues to reside there today and is a graduate of La Salle University.
