As the holiday season approaches, the Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) is encouraging residents to consider more sustainable practices to reduce waste. The EAC suggests that people look for alternatives to traditional gift-giving by choosing services, tickets, gift cards, dining experiences, crafts, or second-hand items.

The EAC also recommends rethinking how gifts are wrapped. Instead of single-use wrapping paper, they advise using fabric such as bandannas, dishtowels, or scarves. Ribbons and gift tags can be saved and reused rather than discarded. “Get creative with paper and boxes – reuse, repurpose, and make every wrap count,” the council states.

For holiday gatherings, the EAC advises against disposable serving ware. They recommend using personal dishes, flatware, and glassware instead. “It’s these small, intentional choices that collectively make a difference,” according to the EAC.

In addition to offering tips for a less wasteful holiday season, the EAC announced an ongoing Holiday Lights Recycling event at the Township Building Police Lobby from December 1 through January 15. Residents interested in volunteering with the EAC can help by emptying recycling bins from the Police Lobby into the courtyard.

Those who wish to get involved or seek more information can email WhitpainEAC@gmail.com or visit the council’s website.
