Dr. Samantha Pettigrew, an Assistant Professor of Clinical Thoracic Medicine at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, has provided insights into the gender differences in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). In her comments to Sleep-Wake Advisor, Dr. Pettigrew discussed the increasing evidence that sleep-related breathing disorders such as OSA may manifest and develop differently in women compared to men. These differences include distinct symptom profiles, triggers, and risk factors.
“Obstructive sleep apnea can present and progress differently in women,” Dr. Pettigrew stated. Her observations highlight the need for further research into how these disorders uniquely affect women.
