The Philadelphia Flyers secured a 5-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night at Prudential Center in Newark. This marks the second time within a week that the Flyers have defeated the Devils, handing New Jersey its first regulation home loss of the season. The win also marked Rick Tocchet’s 300th career victory as an NHL head coach.
With this result, the Flyers concluded their road trip with three wins out of four games. Their overall record now stands at 14-7-3, including a 6-4-1 mark on the road. Over their last 11 games, they have posted a 7-2-2 record.
Owen Tippett opened scoring for Philadelphia with his 100th career NHL goal and 200th career point at 5:18 in the first period. Simon Nemec equalized for New Jersey later in the period.
Matvei Michkov restored the Flyers’ lead early in the second period, ending a nine-game goalless streak for Travis Konecny, who extended Philadelphia’s advantage to 3-1. Trevor Zegras added another goal before Timo Meier scored for New Jersey to cut into the deficit.
In the third period, Dawson Mercer brought New Jersey within one goal before Tippett was awarded an automatic empty net goal after being tripped on a breakaway, sealing the final score at 5-3.
Goaltender Dan Vladar made 28 saves on 31 shots for Philadelphia, while Jacob Markstrom stopped 28 of 32 shots for New Jersey. The Flyers were unsuccessful on both power play opportunities but killed three out of four penalties.
Tippett was named first star of the game after his two-goal performance and milestone achievements. Matvei Michkov continued his strong play against New Jersey by scoring in both recent matchups and contributing defensively during key moments in Saturday’s game.
Travis Sanheim recorded two assists and finished plus-one in nearly twenty-five minutes of ice time. Cam York contributed an assist and blocked three shots but took a penalty late in regulation with Philadelphia holding onto a narrow lead.
Philadelphia’s fourth line showed improvement compared to their previous outing against the Islanders and played a more effective role throughout this contest.
The Flyers finished with 23 blocked shots; Nick Seeler led all players with five blocks. Sean Couturier won ten out of fifteen faceoffs as part of an overall solid team effort at both ends of the ice.
