The Philadelphia Flyers were defeated 3-2 by the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday afternoon at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Despite a late push in the third period, the Flyers were unable to tie the game and force overtime against the NHL’s top-ranked team.

Sean Couturier marked his 900th career NHL game and 33rd birthday with his fifth goal of the season, putting Philadelphia ahead early in the first period. The Avalanche responded with goals from Brent Burns and Brock Nelson to take a 2-1 lead into intermission.

Colorado extended their advantage early in the second period when Valeri Nichushkin scored. Travis Konecny brought Philadelphia back within one, but it was not enough. In total, Konecny had nine shots on goal and scored once but was also charged with four giveaways.

Goaltender Samuel Ersson made 25 saves on 28 shots for Philadelphia. Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 24 of 26 shots for Colorado.

The Flyers’ efforts included several notable moments: Trevor Zegras was denied on a penalty shot in the third period, while Noah Cates went seven-for-ten on faceoffs overall. Garnet Hathaway and Nicolas Deslauriers combined for eight hits during limited ice time late in the game.

Special teams played a role as well; Colorado won that aspect by going one-for-two on power plays while Philadelphia failed to convert their lone opportunity.

Travis Sanheim led all Flyers skaters with nearly 26 minutes of ice time over 34 shifts. The Flyers improved at even strength as the game progressed but ultimately could not overcome an early deficit or capitalize on late opportunities.
