The Philadelphia Flyers were defeated by the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-3 at PPG Paints Arena on Thursday. Special teams played a key role in the outcome, with the Flyers unable to capitalize on their power play opportunities and struggling on the penalty kill. The loss extends the Flyers’ winless streak to five games.

Justin Brazeau opened scoring for Pittsburgh with a power play goal early in the first period. Bryan Rust added another power play goal later in the frame, giving the Penguins a 2-0 lead after one period. Egor Chinakhov increased Pittsburgh’s advantage early in the second before Rodrigo Abols scored for Philadelphia. Noel Acciari made it 4-1 late in the second period.

In the third period, Sidney Crosby and Connor Dewar scored closely spaced goals to give Pittsburgh a five-goal lead. Nick Seeler and Matvei Michkov each scored for Philadelphia to close out the game.

Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson was replaced by Aleksei Kolosov after allowing three goals on 14 shots. Kolosov stopped 13 of 16 shots in relief. Jeff Skinner made 30 saves on 33 shots for Pittsburgh.

The Flyers took several penalties throughout the game, leading to multiple power play opportunities for Pittsburgh. “Including the earlier Brazeau goal, the Rust tally marked the 11th opposing power play goal the Flyers have allowed in eight games,” according to team analysis from postgame notes.

Philadelphia went 0-for-4 on its own power plays and killed only one of four penalties faced during the contest.

Owen Tippett, who had been productive recently, did not record a point but registered five shots on goal out of nine attempts.

The Flyers compete as a professional ice hockey team in the National Hockey League and play their home games at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia (official website). The organization has been part of NHL competition since joining as an expansion team in 1967 and has won two Stanley Cup championships (official website).

The team’s next opportunity to end its winless streak will come as they continue their regular season schedule.
