The Philadelphia Flyers, who recently achieved their first three-game winning streak in over three months, are not planning to pursue short-term rental players as the NHL Trade Deadline approaches. The team’s general manager, Daniel Briere, made clear after a 3-2 shootout win against the Toronto Maple Leafs that the focus remains on building for the future.
The Flyers’ victory brought them closer to a playoff spot, narrowing the gap to four points behind the Boston Bruins for the final wild card position in the Eastern Conference. Despite their improved standing, Briere said there would be no change in approach. “Nope,” he said when asked if recent success had shifted management’s outlook.
Briere explained that short-term gains from acquiring rental players are not part of their current plan. “I think that’s very fair to say at this point,” he noted. Instead, decisions will prioritize long-term goals. “What matters for us is obviously the future. We’re still building for the future,” Briere said.
When questioned about potential trades involving current roster members such as defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen, Briere did not address individual cases but emphasized a careful approach: “Listen, you know, I’m not saying we’re against improving the team if it makes sense both for now and in the future.”
Players have expressed satisfaction with team chemistry and recent performance. Defenseman Cam York commented: “Absolutely. You know, our last three games have been really good. We know when we play our game we can be a really good team and a tough team to beat. So, yeah, it would be really nice.”
Briere acknowledged that many teams remain undecided ahead of Friday’s deadline because of close standings across the league: “Yeah, I think it feels that way at this point. We will see… We’re in no rush to make a decision.”
Reflecting on his tenure since being named general manager in May 2023 and discussing previous deals like acquiring forward Trevor Zegras from Anaheim last summer, Briere said: “Trevor fit in to what we were doing… it was great to bring him in, but he fit the mold of what we were trying to do.”
On balancing playoff aspirations with long-term planning, Briere stated: “The goal is always to make the playoffs, but at the same time, we’re trying to build a team that’s going to become a contender for years to come… We want to build a team that sustains it year after year.”
