The Philadelphia Flyers have appointed Daniel Bove as Vice President, Athlete Performance and Wellness. The announcement was made by General Manager Daniel Briere.
Bove will work with several departments, including analytics, to create individualized performance, health, and wellness plans for players. He will collaborate closely with the team’s doctors and medical staff at Penn Medicine. According to the organization, Bove’s experience in leading integrated performance teams aligns with the Flyers’ commitment to providing top care and a competitive edge for their athletes.
“Daniel brings a wealth of experience integrating sports science, performance, and technology at the highest level,” said Briere. “Throughout his career, his focus has been to align several key departments, including strength & conditioning, medical and player development with a clear, strategic vision to drive performance at every level for our players. His leadership and forward-thinking approach will strengthen how we support our players both on and off the ice. We’re excited to welcome him and his family back to Philadelphia and are confident he will be an important asset to our organization.”
“First and foremost, I’ve been a Philly sports fan since I was a kid and it’s been a dream of mine to make it back,” said Bove. “I’ve always admired the attributes that make up a hockey player, paired with the grit and grind of the sport, and I look forward to joining this highly respected staff and first-class organization. My biggest priority is to develop that potential and help put our players in the best possible position to perform at the highest level on and off the ice.”
Bove comes to the Flyers after 10 years in the NBA. Most recently he was Vice President of High Performance for the New Orleans Pelicans where he worked on aligning sports science with strength training and long-term player growth. He also led athlete management system development using advanced strategies for player health optimization.
Previously, Bove held positions as Director of Performance for the Phoenix Suns from 2018–20 and as Sports Scientist/Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach with the Atlanta Hawks from 2016–18.
His hiring is part of ongoing efforts by the Flyers—who compete in professional ice hockey as part of the National Hockey League (official website)—to modernize support systems for players both during games and outside competition. The club continues expanding resources at its training center while adding coaches and support staff focused on analytics and player development.
A Philadelphia native, Bove returns home holding degrees from Penn State University (B.S., Kinesiology) and University of South Florida (M.S., Exercise Science). He is certified as both a strength & conditioning specialist (CSCS) and corrective exercise specialist (CES), has served as a graduate assistant/performance lab supervisor at USF, and authored two books: The Quadrant System: Navigating Stress in Team Sport; Takeoff: A Visual Guide to Training and Monitoring Lower Body Power.
The Flyers not only provide professional ice hockey entertainment but also participate in community outreach programs such as cancer awareness initiatives (official website).
