Fox Chase Cancer Center surgeons have edited a new textbook intended for trainees in surgical oncology. The book, titled Surgical Oncology Clerkship: A Guide for Senior Medical Students, includes 32 chapters and is published by Springer. It covers a range of topics relevant to surgical oncology, with contributions from recognized experts in the field.
The editors aimed to create a comprehensive resource for students preparing to enter the surgical oncology profession. “To date, there has not been a comprehensive educational resource for medical students rotating through surgical oncology clerkships. This is the first textbook of its kind to provide this important resource for students,” said Villano.
Chapters address care strategies for different cancer types such as esophageal, melanoma, and pancreatic cancers. The content also discusses how to examine cancer patients thoroughly, the role of surgeons in palliative care, and guidance on preparing for both clinic and operating room environments.
“We designed the book to be an accessible yet comprehensive resource. Its chapters utilize a streamlined outline format, which allows for rapid assimilation of key oncology concepts and would be a valuable tool immediately before clinics or the operating room. We are extremely excited to disseminate this book to trainees across the country and beyond,” Villano stated.
Farma added, “Our hope is that this book will serve as a useful guide for those surgical oncologists beginning their career in this exciting field. It is a privilege to have not only taken part in creating this text, but to contribute to the growing knowledge of the field for the next generation of surgical oncologists.”
Fox Chase Cancer Center is located in Philadelphia and was founded in 1904. Dr. Robert Uzzo serves as its current president. The hospital functions as a training facility; according to its 2022 annual report, it conducted 5,069 surgeries and admitted 3,488 patients during that year.
