Conversations in western Pennsylvania are highlighting the need for more robust energy policies, according to state representatives Martina White, Tim O’Neal, and David Rowe. This week, U.S. Senator Dave McCormick is hosting a summit at Carnegie Mellon University aimed at linking leaders in energy, artificial intelligence, finance, and government to discuss the future of energy and innovation.
Pennsylvania is currently the second-largest producer of electricity in the nation. The representatives emphasize the importance of building on this legacy to maintain leadership throughout the 21st century.
“Gov. Josh Shapiro should take the recommendations of today’s business and public policy leaders – don’t over tax, don’t overregulate and don’t over litigate,” said Rep. White. She believes that Pennsylvania has potential for significant investment by aligning advanced industries with its energy sector.
The representatives expressed concerns about Gov. Shapiro’s proposals such as PRESS and PACER which establish energy mandates that they believe could increase costs for consumers through utility bills due to increased renewable sources and a carbon tax.
Rep. Rowe advocated for further investments in natural gas production to leverage Pennsylvania’s history and create jobs while ensuring reliable power supply amidst recent grid disruptions globally.
“Pennsylvania needs energy policies that focus on affordability and reliability,” said Rep. O’Neal.
