Bryce Harper had a standout performance in the Philadelphia Phillies’ 13-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park. Despite dealing with injuries this season, Harper managed four extra-base hits, including his first career home run against Justin Verlander. His performance provided hope for a strong second half of the season.
“I mean, I’m really good,” Harper stated. “I know when I’m going well, I’m one of the best in baseball.”
Harper’s efforts, combined with Jesús Luzardo’s seven scoreless innings, helped the Phillies avoid a sweep by the Giants. The team had not won a series in San Francisco since 2013.
“We’ve got to stay step by step right now with the Mets,” Harper said.
Harper’s homer in the fourth inning gave the Phillies an early lead. It was his first extra-base hit since returning from injury on June 30 and his first home run since June 3.
“If I can find ways to do that and not chase pitcher’s pitches out of the zone,” Harper noted, “everything will fall into place.”
Phillies manager Rob Thomson believed Harper was close to putting together a strong performance and expressed optimism about his potential impact on the team’s offense.
“Mentally, you’ve got to be strong,” Harper remarked regarding maintaining confidence throughout ups and downs.
