Orion Kerkering achieved a significant milestone by securing his first career save in the Philadelphia Phillies’ 5-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on Monday night. Phillies manager Rob Thomson expressed surprise at this being Kerkering’s first save, stating, “He pitched great.”

Kerkering’s performance is part of a series of strong outings. The 24-year-old has not allowed an earned run in 17 consecutive appearances since May 9. During this period, he has achieved seven holds and two wins, with Monday marking his first save.

Reflecting on his achievement, Kerkering said, “It feels great. Just to be able to continue the stretch I’m on right now [since] the beginning of May, and just kind of keep it rolling and not overthink the situation. I think that’s what’s most important.”

The Phillies have faced challenges in their bullpen throughout the season, exacerbated by José Alvarado’s suspension for a PED violation on May 18. Since then, Kerkering has been instrumental in relief efforts, maintaining a streak of scoreless innings.

Kerkering’s contributions have been crucial amid struggles faced by Jordan Romano. Romano initially struggled with a 13.50 ERA but improved with nine scoreless appearances from April 27-May 22. However, recent performances have seen him allow runs in several games.

On Monday night, Romano was used in the seventh inning and delivered a scoreless frame before Matt Strahm handled the eighth inning against the top order. This setup allowed Kerkering to close out the game efficiently with only 12 pitches.

Since debuting late in 2023, Kerkering has maintained a reliable presence in the bullpen with a career ERA of 2.36 across 100 appearances. Despite expectations for him to be fourth behind Alvarado, Strahm, and Romano this season, circumstances have elevated him to one of the top two relievers for the team.

While successful overall, Kerkering still faces areas for improvement as he has allowed eight out of his 21 inherited runners (38.1%) to score this season and permitted multiple baserunners during his current streak without an earned run.

As the Trade Deadline approaches next month, it is likely that Philadelphia will seek additional relief options; however, Kerkering will continue to have opportunities to solidify his role within their bullpen strategy.
