The Philadelphia Flyers were defeated by the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-3 at Nationwide Arena on Wednesday night. Despite a strong performance from Travis Konecny, who recorded a hat trick, the Flyers were unable to secure a win.
The Blue Jackets took an early lead with Charlie Coyle scoring just 38 seconds into the game. Konecny tied the game in the first period, but Kirill Marchenko restored Columbus’ advantage in the final minute of the opening frame. Early in the second period, Erik Gudbranson extended the Blue Jackets’ lead to 3-1.
Konecny scored twice in the third period to bring his tally for the night to three goals and temporarily tied the game at 3-3. However, Sean Monahan put Columbus back ahead, and Mathieu Olivier added an empty-net goal late in regulation.
Flyers goaltender Dan Vladar returned to action after missing two weeks due to injury and made 26 saves on 30 shots. Columbus netminder Elvis Merzlikins stopped 22 of Philadelphia’s 25 shots.
Rasmus Ristolainen left the game early in the first period with a lower-body injury and did not return.
Philadelphia struggled on special teams throughout the night, going scoreless on five power play opportunities while successfully killing all three of Columbus’ power plays. The Blue Jackets managed one goal during a four-on-four situation.
The Flyers’ starting lineup included Trevor Zegras centering Konecny and Christian Dvorak. Other forward lines featured Denver Barkey with Sean Couturier and Owen Tippett; Matvei Michkov with Noah Cates and Bobby Brink; as well as Carl Grundstrom with Lane Pederson and Nikita Grebenkin. Defensive pairings were Travis Sanheim with Ristolainen, Cam York with Jamie Drysdale, and Nick Seeler with Noah Juulsen.
Despite generating more offense through the middle of the ice during their third-period comeback attempt, Philadelphia was unable to capitalize on late chances—including a shot off the post by Tippett during a late power play—before ultimately conceding two decisive goals in the final minutes.
