Several Major League Baseball series this week are drawing attention for their potential postseason implications and longstanding rivalries.
The Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs will play five games at Wrigley Field, including a doubleheader on Monday. The teams have split their eight meetings so far this season, but the Brewers have won three of the last four. Milwaukee’s recent 14-game winning streak has increased its division lead over Chicago from one game to eight. This is the final regular-season meeting between these clubs.
The Houston Astros will visit the Detroit Tigers for three games. The Astros took two out of three against Detroit in April, following last year’s AL Wild Card Series where the Tigers eliminated Houston. Both teams struggled in July but have shown signs of improvement recently. Tuesday’s pitching matchup features Hunter Brown and Tarik Skubal, both among league leaders in ERA.
In Philadelphia, the Mariners and Phillies will face off for three games starting Monday. These teams have not played each other in Philadelphia since April 2023, when the Phillies won two out of three games. The Mariners lead their all-time series with Philadelphia 14-11 and took a home series against them last August. Both teams are performing well this month; Seattle is close behind Houston in the AL West while Philadelphia leads by five games in the NL East. Their lineups feature strong power hitters and top pitchers.
“This might be the best one,” says an unnamed source about this matchup between Seattle and Philadelphia. “The Mariners and Phillies rank second and tied for fourth, respectively, in winning percentage this month.” Kyle Schwarber is on pace for 56 home runs for Philadelphia, while Cal Raleigh of Seattle is approaching a single-season record for home runs by a primary catcher.
The Boston Red Sox travel to New York to play four games against the Yankees later in the week. Boston enters with a five-game win streak over New York, including a sweep at Fenway Park earlier this season that contributed to a downturn for the Yankees’ standings position. Both teams remain competitive in pursuit of playoff spots.
Finally, after facing each other last weekend, the Los Angeles Dodgers meet the San Diego Padres again for three games at Petco Park. The Dodgers swept San Diego recently to move ahead in their division race and now hold an 8-2 advantage over them this year.
Mookie Betts has begun showing improved performance after struggling earlier in his season with Los Angeles: “Betts delivered the game-winning blow in Sunday’s series finale at Dodger Stadium and has recorded a .341/.400/.523 slash line with 12 runs and nine RBIs in his previous 11 games.”
These matchups may offer early previews of possible postseason contests as teams compete for playoff positioning heading into September.
