Pennsylvania State Representative Martina White has called on Governor Josh Shapiro to confirm the state’s participation in a new federal tax credit program designed to support school choice. The appeal comes during National School Choice Week, which runs from January 25 to 31.

The federal budget reconciliation bill passed last summer introduced a tax credit under the Educational Choice for Children Act. This measure allows individuals to receive up to $1,700 in tax credits by contributing to organizations that provide scholarships for families seeking alternatives to public schools, including private, parochial, charter, or cyber charter institutions. The program is set to take effect in 2027 but requires confirmation from state leadership for Pennsylvania’s involvement.

“Data tells us more than 280,000 students within the Commonwealth receive their education outside public school settings. National School Choice Week reminds us that education cannot be a one-size-fits-all approach,” White said.

White has previously supported expanding Pennsylvania’s own Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) programs and continues her advocacy for these initiatives alongside the proposed federal tax credit.

National School Choice Week features events nationwide that spotlight various parent-driven educational models and alternative schooling options such as scholarship programs, charter schools, microschools, and homeschooling networks.
