MBCure, a nonprofit organization dedicated to metastatic breast cancer (MBC) research and advocacy, has announced the formation of the MBCure Research Consortium. This initiative involves collaboration with three leading cancer institutions: Fox Chase Cancer Center, Penn Medicine’s Abramson Cancer Center, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
The consortium aims to fund advanced research and enhance cooperation among these top institutions to explore curative-intent pathways for MBC. Despite extensive research efforts over the years, MBC remains incurable. The consortium will facilitate open communication and collaboration among breast oncologists and researchers to achieve more efficient results.
Currently, less than 10% of breast cancer research funding is directed toward stage 4 breast cancer or MBC. MBCure plans to address this gap by allocating most of its annual net proceeds to support the consortium’s work at these institutions. Each institution will have an appointed MBCure Liaison responsible for ensuring that funds are used effectively for curative-intent discoveries.
The designated liaisons include Rachel Jankowitz, MD from Penn Medicine; Pedram Razavi, MD, PhD from MSK; and a representative from Fox Chase Cancer Center yet to be named.
Dr. Razavi emphasized MSK’s commitment “to advancing translational research that uncovers the biological drivers of therapy response and resistance in metastatic breast cancer.” Dr. McShane from Fox Chase expressed pride in being part of “a groundbreaking effort” through this unique collaboration aimed at finding curative therapies for patients with MBC. Dr. Jankowitz expressed gratitude towards MBCure for supporting regional collaborations within their Breast Cancer Program.
MBCure’s mission extends beyond funding research; it aims to fuel a movement focused on survival and hope for those affected by MBC. Ninety percent of its annual net proceeds will go toward the consortium while reserving 10% for non-research initiatives related to awareness, education, and access efforts.
