The University of Pennsylvania men’s basketball team is set to compete for its 14th Philadelphia Big 5 title on Saturday, aiming for its first championship since the 2018-19 season. The Quakers will face Villanova in the Big 5 Classic championship game at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Penn advanced to the final after defeating Saint Joseph’s and Drexel during pod play. Villanova reached the championship by securing wins over La Salle and Temple. This marks Penn’s first appearance in the Big 5 Classic title game since the event adopted its current format three years ago. In previous years, Penn played in the third-place game (2023) and fifth-place game (2024), but has yet to record a win at the Classic.
“Saturday’s game actually represents Penn’s second straight winner-take-all contest; last Sunday, the Quakers met Hofstra in its final Cathedral Classic game with both teams sporting 2-0 tournament records. The Pride won the de fact tourney title, 77-60,” according to information from Penn Athletics.
The matchup will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Philadelphia, with Matt Martucci providing play-by-play commentary and Dr. John Giannini serving as analyst. Fans can also listen to coverage via the Quaker Audio Network, which streams all games online.
This meeting marks the 72nd time Penn and Villanova have faced each other, with Villanova holding a 51-20 advantage in their series history. Last year’s encounter saw Villanova win decisively, while Penn claimed victory two years ago at The Palestra.
Several Penn players have made notable contributions this season. Michael Zanoni has maintained a perfect free throw percentage (16-for-16), while senior Cam Thrower is shooting .933 from the line. Freshman Dalton Scantlebury recorded a perfect field-goal performance against Merrimack and leads Ivy League players in offensive rebounds per game (3.25). TJ Power averages 17 points per Division I game and is second among Ivy League players in rebounds per game (7.9). Ethan Roberts leads Ivy League scorers with an average of over 20 points per game entering this week.
Three Penn players—Zanoni, Roberts, and Power—have earned Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Week honors this season, while Scantlebury was named both Big 5 Rookie of the Week and Ivy League Rookie of the Week last Monday.
Looking ahead on their schedule, Penn will renew a rivalry with Rutgers on December 20 for their first meeting since 1975. The team will also host NJIT on New Year’s Eve and navigate a new Ivy League schedule format that includes nationally televised games against Yale and Princeton on ESPNU.
