The University of Pennsylvania men’s squash team is set to face Drexel University in a highly anticipated match on Wednesday, December 3, at the Penn Squash Center. Both teams are undefeated this season and will compete for the Pennsylvania State Classic championship.
Penn, currently ranked No. 1, holds a 5-0 record and recently defeated No. 4 Virginia with a score of 7-2. The Quakers have dominated their early season, sweeping four out of five opponents and achieving an overall individual match record of 51-2. Senior captain Omar Hafez has won his first four matches in the top position, while junior Salman Khalil remains unbeaten in both the second and third positions. Freshman Will Newman is tied with Hafez, Zane Patel, and Jat Tse for the team lead with four wins each. Senior Rehan Luthra secured a notable comeback victory against Virginia’s Cavaliers by overturning a 2-1 deficit to win 3-2.
If Penn wins against Drexel, they will secure the Pennsylvania State Classic championship.
Drexel enters the contest ranked No. 6 nationally after moving up two spots following their recent win over Princeton. The Dragons are also undefeated at 4-0 this season. Guido Lindner recorded a straight-set victory in the second position against Princeton’s Avi Agarwal and also won in the top spot against Chatham’s Sebastian Vaca Sanchez. Freshman Nico Serna has started strong for Drexel with two wins in the top position.
The match is scheduled for Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. at the Penn Squash Center in Philadelphia.
