The University of Pennsylvania’s men’s and women’s squash teams are set to resume their seasons this weekend with matches against Trinity College and Yale University. Both teams will play on Saturday and Sunday, facing strong competition as they aim to maintain their undefeated records.
The Penn men’s team, currently ranked No. 1 in the College Squash Association (CSA) rankings, will compete against No. 2 Trinity on Saturday in Hartford, Connecticut. This match is expected to be one of the toughest tests for the Quakers so far this season. On Sunday, they will face Ivy League rival Yale, which holds the No. 5 ranking, in New Haven.
For the women’s squad, ranked No. 2 nationally, Saturday’s match against No. 5 Trinity presents an opportunity to break a nine-game losing streak against the Bantams, who are defending back-to-back national champions. The team will then begin Ivy League play on Sunday with a match against No. 8 Yale.
According to recent results, the Penn men’s team has started the season with a perfect 7-0 record after sweeping Western in their last outing. Players Omar Hafez, Salman Khalil, and Alex Dartnell are all ranked among the top ten in CSA player standings. The team leads the nation in total individual match wins this season with 60 victories; thirteen out of sixteen players remain undefeated.
The Penn women’s team also remains unbeaten after securing their seventh win of the year by defeating Georgetown. Standout players Franka Vidovic, Allie Stoddard, Savannah Ingledew, Malak Taha, and Ashna Tumuluri are listed among CSA’s top ten individuals. Penn is one of only two women’s teams nationwide that have yet to lose a match this season and has recorded impressive wins over Stanford and Virginia.
Trinity’s men enter Saturday’s contest with a 5-0 record for the year and have swept three opponents so far. Senior Benedek Takacs and freshman Segundo Portabales each hold undefeated records and top-ten CSA rankings.
On the women’s side, Trinity is aiming for its third consecutive national title after winning five of its first six matches this season. The Lady Bantams recently lost to Stanford but previously won eighteen straight matches dating back to January 2024 and secured their eighteenth consecutive NESCAC conference title with a sweep over Tufts.
Yale’s men come into Sunday’s matchup at 2-1 for the season after beating Drexel and MIT but falling to Virginia in their opener. Senior Tad Carney has won all three of his matches at first position and is currently ranked No. 31 by CSA; sophomore Rohan Aryan Gondi is also undefeated through three matches.
Yale’s women are currently 1-1 following a loss to Virginia and a win over Drexel earlier this winter. Sophomore Heng Wai Wong split her opening two matches at first position after earning First Team All-Ivy honors last year; sophomore Spring Ma also split her two contests at second position.
This weekend marks key early-season tests for both Penn squads as they look to continue their strong starts against some of college squash’s most competitive programs.
