The University of Pennsylvania women’s tennis team will face Drexel University this Saturday at noon at the Hecht Tennis Center. The match is known as the “Battle of 33rd Street,” highlighting the local rivalry between the two Philadelphia schools.
Penn enters the contest with a 2-2 record after losses to Michigan and Notre Dame in last weekend’s ITA Kick-Off event. The Quakers were unable to secure any completed singles or doubles victories against either opponent, with several matches being abandoned before completion. Among the closest contests was Varsha Vedula’s singles match against Michigan’s Laura Rahnel, which reached a third set but was stopped with a score of 1-1. Maya Urata and Joleen Saw also took their singles matches against Michigan to three sets before play was halted.
Drexel comes into Saturday’s matchup with a 1-1 record for the season, having lost to Fordham and defeated Saint Joseph’s. Anastasia Kavounov has won both her singles matches so far this year. In doubles, Kavounov and partner Rebecca Fiedler earned a win against Saint Joseph’s, as did Sofia Snitko and Christine Fourie.
