Cristopher Sánchez became the latest Philadelphia Phillies player to leave Spring Training camp in Clearwater, Florida, as he joined the Dominican Republic team for the World Baseball Classic. Several other Phillies have also departed to represent their countries, including Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and Brad Keller for Team USA; Max Lazar and Garrett Stubbs for Israel; Aaron Nola and Dante Nori for Italy; Edmundo Sosa for Panama; and Taijuan Walker for Mexico. Jesús Luzardo could join Venezuela later in the tournament if needed.
Despite these absences, attention remains on several key storylines during Spring Training. Among them are prospects Justin Crawford and Andrew Painter. J.T. Realmuto commented on Painter’s role: “The Phillies don’t need Andrew Painter (Phillies’ No. 2 prospect, No. 28 overall) to ‘light the world on fire’ in a rotation that includes Zack Wheeler (eventually), Sánchez, Luzardo, Nola and Walker.” He added that similar expectations apply to Crawford: “Crawford just needs to catch the ball in center field and hit a little as the Phillies’ No. 9 hitter.”
Crawford has started spring with a .316 batting average over 19 at-bats and has performed well defensively. Painter impressed by pitching two perfect innings against the Yankees in his spring debut.
Zack Wheeler’s return is another focus point after he suggested he could rejoin the rotation by early April. Each step of his recovery is closely watched as he continues bullpen sessions this spring.
Competition continues for two available bullpen spots among relievers on the 40-man roster such as Kyle Backhus, Seth Johnson, Chase Shugart, Nolan Hoffman, Yoniel Curet, Zach McCambley, Zach Pop, and Max Lazar. So far this spring, Backhus, Johnson and Shugart have stood out among candidates.
Bench depth is also under review following reports that Johan Rojas faces an 80-game suspension due to a violation of league policy on performance-enhancing drugs. This development affects center-field options behind Adolis García and Brandon Marsh. Otto Kemp and Edmundo Sosa are expected to secure bench roles alongside either Rafael Marchán or Garrett Stubbs as backup catcher while Dylan Moore is favored for a utility spot.
The projected Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs rotation includes Jean Cabrera—ranked No. 15 prospect by MLB Pipeline—Tucker Davidson, Alan Rangel and Bryse Wilson. The organization expects additional starting pitchers from Triple-A will be called upon during the season.
The Philadelphia Phillies serve fans locally in Philadelphia as well as regionally and nationally through games at Citizens Bank Park since 2004. The club operates under leadership from its front office executives while maintaining its status as a charter member of Major League Baseball’s National League.
