The Philadelphia Phillies are currently evaluating Otto Kemp’s potential as a left fielder. During Sunday night’s 7-1 win over the Mets, Kemp managed to field a routine base hit from Francisco Lindor and tracked down a fly ball from Luis Torrens in his first Major League appearance in the outfield.
Phillies manager Rob Thomson expressed interest in giving Kemp more opportunities to play left field. “I do. I do,” Thomson said regarding plans for Kemp. “Because I think he’s comfortable with it… so far, he looks very comfortable.”
Kemp’s transition to the outfield comes as the team seeks alternatives while Bryce Harper recovers from right wrist inflammation. The plan is for Kemp and Max Kepler to form a platoon in left field, with Kemp starting against left-handed pitchers.
Kemp, naturally a third baseman, has worked hard to adapt to this new role. He had limited experience playing in the outfield during his time in the Minor Leagues and only began making appearances in left field on April 17 at Triple-A before being called up on June 7.
Despite the challenges of learning a new position, Kemp remains focused on contributing wherever needed. “Really, at the end of the day, all I try to do is focus on what I need to do that day to be in the best place to help the team,” he said before his debut in left field.
With Harper’s return uncertain, finding a suitable spot for Kemp remains crucial for both him and the team. As he stated earlier this month upon being called up: “I’m always down for whatever’s going to keep me in the lineup.”
Kemp appreciates having an opportunity within such a competitive lineup. “I feel very lucky… they’re trying to get me in there and giving me opportunities among all those guys is a blessing,” he said.
