With Bryce Harper nearing his return to the Philadelphia Phillies, the team faces decisions regarding Otto Kemp’s role. Kemp has been a regular starter in Harper’s absence, playing at third base initially and later alternating between first base against right-handed pitchers and left field against left-handers.
Since making his MLB debut on June 7, Kemp has started 20 of 21 games. However, Harper’s return could limit Kemp’s opportunities. Manager Rob Thomson acknowledged the situation, stating, “He could stick around, yeah. I really like his at-bats. I really do.”
Kemp might continue with the team in a reduced role or be sent back to Triple-A Lehigh Valley for more consistent playtime. With first base not an option upon Harper’s return, Kemp may see time in left field.
Max Kepler has been a fixture against right-handed starters this season but has struggled with a .205/.312/.380 slash line. In contrast, Kemp is hitting .245/.298/.377 against righties. The short-term plan may involve Kepler facing right-handers and Kemp taking on lefties.
Meanwhile, Justin Crawford, the team’s No. 3 prospect and a left-handed outfielder performing well in Triple-A with a .335/.409/.442 line and 26 stolen bases, remains an option for future call-ups if consistent at-bats are available.
Thomson remarked on Crawford’s potential role: “I would think a young guy like that has got to play, not every day, but very consistently.” This scenario might still leave room for Kemp to play in left field.
Kemp’s performance could improve as he settles into one position after adjusting to both Major League pitching and new defensive roles simultaneously. Thomson praised him: “He’s got really good aptitude… He adjusts very well and very easily.”
