The Philadelphia Phillies are evaluating options as the Major League Baseball trade deadline approaches, with outfielder Luis Robert Jr. of the Chicago White Sox emerging as a potential target. During Monday night’s game at Rate Field in Chicago, Robert hit a two-run home run off Cristopher Sánchez, contributing to the Phillies’ 6-2 loss.

Robert, who may be traded before Thursday’s 6 p.m. ET deadline, addressed speculation about his future. “A good amount of my friends have been sending me photos and text messages with rumors and all that stuff, but I tried not to pay attention to that,” Robert said through Chicago’s interpreter.

The Phillies’ main priority is acquiring a closer, but available high-end relievers are limited. Boston’s Aroldis Chapman remains with a contender, Baltimore’s Félix Bautista is injured, and Cleveland’s Emmanuel Clase has been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave through August 31.

If relief pitching options do not materialize by the deadline, the team may shift focus toward improving its lineup. Arizona third baseman Eugenio Suárez is considered one of the best hitters available; however, he exited Monday’s game in Detroit after being hit on the hand by a pitch and will undergo further testing despite negative X-rays.

Suárez could play third base for Philadelphia until Alec Bohm returns from injury and then transition to designated hitter. This move would likely shift Kyle Schwarber back to left field. Phillies manager Rob Thomson expressed confidence in this possibility: “We did that in ’22,” Thomson said. “It worked out pretty well, and I think he’s moving better now than he did back then.”

Bryce Harper also indicated flexibility regarding his position if it means adding significant offensive power: “If it ever gets to that point, I’m willing,” Harper said. “Whenever [Dave] Dombrowski gives me a call or if that right player comes aboard, yeah.

“I played it for a long time. Obviously, I haven’t in a long time as well. If we did have that communication, obviously on days where Bohm or Suárez don’t play, I’d like to stick at first just for reps and things like that. I don’t want to lose first base, just the way I play over there.”

Harper noted he has not had recent discussions with team management about changing positions but reiterated his willingness: “If it’s even a possibility, I’ll do anything for this team to win games,” Harper said. “I don’t think he would move me just to move me. I would think they would get the right player. I don’t think it’s going to be something that’s not right for our team.”

Acquiring Robert would allow both Harper and Schwarber to remain at their current positions since Robert plays center field. Although his performance has dipped over the past two seasons, Robert has improved recently—batting .318 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in July—and has posted strong numbers against left-handed pitchers this season.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson commented on Robert’s abilities: “He’s strong,” Thomson said. “He made a heck of a play in the outfield. A line drive to [Brandon] Marsh the first time up, the home run. He’s a strong guy that can really run.”

“He’s a good player,” Sánchez added.

With less than three days remaining before the trade deadline decision must be made regarding possible roster changes involving players such as Luis Robert Jr., he responded simply when asked how he will handle ongoing speculation: “Day by day,” he said in English.
