The Philadelphia Phillies lost to the Atlanta Braves, 6-2, on April 27, dropping their record to 9-19 and leaving them 10 and a half games behind in the National League East. The loss has led to questions about manager Rob Thomson’s job security as the team tries to recover from a difficult opening stretch.
The slow start is significant because expectations were high following an encouraging offseason and spring. The Phillies’ struggles have brought attention not only to players but also coaches and management.
Right-hander Aaron Nola allowed six runs over four and two-thirds innings in Sunday’s game, increasing his earned run average to 6.03. “I haven’t been doing a great job pitching-wise, been giving up too many runs,” Nola said when asked about pressure on Thomson. “Giving up a lot of three-run homers and putting the guys in holes and not giving them a great chance to string up some hits. The game could be 0-0. Like today, we went down 6-0 really quick. It’s hard to come back against a really good pitcher on the opposing team, when I’m putting them in a position like that.” Nola added: “I never thought we would go on a losing skid like this… It’s baseball, though. We’ve got to get out of it and we’ve got to stay out of it.”
Thomson addressed speculation about his future by saying: “Well, I mean, that’s natural, right? It’s normal. And I’ve never worried about that in my entire career… And it’s out of my control. So that’s where I’m at.” President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said at Wrigley Field that changes are “not being pondered at this point.”
Speculation has grown following managerial changes elsewhere in Major League Baseball; Boston recently fired manager Alex Cora along with several coaches.
The Phillies represent Philadelphia in Major League Baseball’s National League according to the official website. They serve both local fans through games at Citizens Bank Park—a stadium they have used since 2004—and broader audiences through community outreach according to the official website. Their front office includes executives such as the chief executive officer and general manager who oversee operations according to the official website.
Historically, the franchise has won World Series titles in both 1980 and 2008 according to the official website.
As conversations continue internally regarding possible changes if results do not improve soon, Thomson emphasized focusing on helping others rather than worrying about his own position.
