The Philadelphia Phillies secured a significant 7-1 victory over the New York Mets on Sunday night at Citizens Bank Park. The win allowed the Phillies to clinch the series and take a one-game lead in the National League East division.
Jesús Luzardo delivered an impressive performance, pitching 6 2/3 scoreless innings. His outing was highlighted by striking out Pete Alonso to end the first inning. Edmundo Sosa contributed offensively with a three-run home run, part of his three-hit night.
“It’s obviously a special day, playing for the [division] lead, playing against a rival,” Sosa stated through a team interpreter. “It makes it exciting. I had a feeling this morning — I woke up really optimistic.”
Kyle Schwarber added to the team’s momentum with his 24th home run of the season during a five-run fourth inning.
“Obviously, two top teams tied for the top of the division [coming in],” Luzardo commented. “So it’ll be fun going into the second half and seeing them again. But we put up a good fight this time. So it was fun.”
After enduring a challenging period where they lost ten out of twelve games, including being swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Phillies have rebounded with nine wins in their last eleven games. This recent success has propelled them ahead of the Mets in their division standings.
“I’ve always said to win the division, you’ve got to win at home and you’ve got to win within your division,” said Phillies manager Rob Thomson.
The Mets had previously eliminated Philadelphia from last year’s NLDS and swept them earlier this season at Citi Field. Thus, this series victory holds particular significance for Thomson’s team as they continue their pursuit of divisional dominance.
Despite trailing earlier in June, Philadelphia managed to overturn an eight-game deficit against New York over just eighteen days leading up to Sunday’s game.
“We expect to win a series, and we expect to win a game when we walk out of the locker room,” Schwarber noted. “We didn’t play our best baseball there over that week-and-a-half span, but I feel like we’re kind of clicking; we’re getting back on track.”
While currently leading their season series four-to-two against New York after this weekend’s games were crucial for maintaining competitiveness within head-to-head matchups between these clubs—their
