Tuesday’s game between the Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres at Citizens Bank Park was postponed due to rain. The teams will now play a day-night doubleheader on Wednesday, with the first game starting at 1:05 p.m. ET and the second at 6:15 p.m. ET.
Mick Abel is set to pitch for Philadelphia in Game 1, while Cristopher Sánchez will take the mound for Game 2. The Padres plan to start Nick Pivetta in the afternoon and Dylan Cease in the evening.
This rescheduling brings back memories of a historic doubleheader between these two teams on July 2, 1993, when Game 2 ended at 4:40 a.m., setting a record for the latest finish in Major League history. That game was delayed by nearly six hours due to rain interruptions during Game 1.
Phillies closer Mitch Williams concluded that memorable night with an opposite-field single in the bottom of the tenth inning, securing a walk-off win for Philadelphia. “The game is over! On an RBI hit by Mitchy Pooh!” exclaimed Hall of Fame broadcaster Harry Kalas as Pete Incaviglia crossed home plate.
Fans holding tickets for Tuesday’s postponed game can use them for entry to Game 2 on Wednesday, with gates opening at 5:15 p.m. Additionally, there will be an Xfinity Fireworks Show following the conclusion of this game.
For those attending Game 1, gates open at noon; however, it should be noted that the Nemours Children’s Health Kids Run the Bases promotion has been canceled. More information regarding ticket policies can be found at phillies.com/postponement.
