The Philadelphia Phillies’ rotation is making headlines for its impressive performance this season. Entering a doubleheader against the San Diego Padres, the team’s rotation was on track to achieve an MLB-best 21.7 WAR, according to FanGraphs. This would place them among the top rotations in baseball history. The strong performances of pitchers Zack Wheeler, Ranger Suárez, Cristopher Sánchez, and Jesús Luzardo have contributed significantly to this achievement.
In Game 2 of the doubleheader, Cristopher Sánchez delivered an outstanding performance, allowing only one run over seven innings in a 5-1 victory. He currently holds a record of 7-2 with a 2.68 ERA this season. Phillies manager Rob Thomson praised Sánchez’s consistency alongside his fellow pitchers: “He’s been just like the rest of them really,” said Thomson. “Just wonderful.”
Despite these successes, challenges remain within the team. Rookie pitcher Mick Abel struggled in Game 1 against the Padres, lasting only 1 2/3 innings and allowing five runs on two hits and five walks in a 6-4 loss. Abel expressed his frustration: “It’s really frustrating,” he said after striking out the first two batters of the game.
Abel’s recent performances have raised questions about his future role in the rotation as Aaron Nola remains sidelined with an injury. However, discussions about Abel’s position are yet to occur within the team.
Looking ahead, Andrew Painter is expected to start Thursday for Triple-A Lehigh Valley but will not join the major league team before the All-Star break due to recovery from Tommy John surgery last year.
Thomson confirmed that there is no current plan to accelerate Painter’s integration into the major league rotation: “I don’t think so, no,” he stated regarding any flexibility in their timetable.
If Abel stays in rotation for now, he is slated for another start next week against San Francisco at Oracle Park—a favorable venue known for being pitcher-friendly.
