The Philadelphia Phillies reached the halfway point of their season with a 2-1 loss to the Houston Astros, completing a three-game sweep at Daikin Park. Despite this setback, the Phillies, with a record of 47-34, remain tied for first place in the National League East alongside the Mets.
“I don’t think we’ve played our best baseball,” said shortstop Trea Turner. “Definitely need to get better. … When you get to that halfway point, it’s time to get going.”
The team is currently on track for 166 home runs this season, which would be their lowest total since 2016. Players like J.T. Realmuto and Nick Castellanos are projected to fall short of their usual power numbers.
Manager Rob Thomson expressed optimism about the lineup’s potential power output: “It’ll come,” he stated. “There’s more power in this lineup than what we’re showing right now.”
While the Phillies have scored seven or more runs in games on numerous occasions, they have also been shut out six times this year.
Looking ahead to potential changes, Justin Crawford has shown promise in Triple-A Lehigh Valley and could provide an internal offensive boost. “Playing great, swinging the bat,” Thomson commented on Crawford’s performance. “He’s been good.” When asked if Crawford was being considered for promotion, Thomson affirmed: “Oh yeah. Absolutely.”
On the pitching front, Philadelphia’s starting rotation has excelled with notable performances from Zack Wheeler (2.55 ERA), Ranger Suárez (2.08 ERA), and Cristopher Sánchez (2.79 ERA). The staff leads Major League Baseball in strikeouts and innings pitched while maintaining one of the top ERAs.
“Our starting pitching has been phenomenal,” said Thomson. “Probably even better than what I had expected.”
Despite ranking 25th in bullpen ERA at 4.63, there is hope that additional arms from their deep rotation could strengthen relief efforts as needed during postseason play.
The Phillies aim to bolster their bullpen by acquiring at least one new piece before next month’s trade deadline but remain optimistic about leveraging existing talent for improvement over the second half of their schedule.
They have 81 games remaining to refine strategies ahead of potential playoff appearances.
