The Philadelphia Phillies have signed Venezuelan outfielder Francisco Renteria, the No. 3 overall prospect in the 2026 international class, marking the highest-ranked international player ever signed by the franchise. The deal reportedly allocates $4 million of the team’s $6,679,200 international signing pool to secure Renteria.
Renteria, a 17-year-old right-handed hitter standing at 6-foot-3, has drawn comparisons to Konnor Griffin, the Pirates’ 2024 first-round Draft pick who quickly became MLB’s top overall prospect. According to evaluators, all of Renteria’s tools are graded as above average or better. He played for Senadores de Caracas in Venezuela’s Major League at age 15 and posted a .286 batting average with three doubles in 28 at-bats against experienced pitchers.
Renteria is noted for his bat speed and advanced strike zone awareness for his age. He is also described as an above-average runner capable of making an impact both on basepaths and defensively in center field.
The Phillies also reached agreements with other prospects during this signing period. Shortstop Juan Parra (No. 39 overall), another Venezuelan player and a participant in MLB’s Trainer Partnership Program led by former Phillie Bobby Abreu, is expected to receive $550,000 from the club. Parra is known for his defensive skills and switch-hitting ability, showing more activity from the left side but with potential for increased power as he matures.
Additionally, right-handed pitcher Justin Burgos from the Dominican Republic will join the organization with a reported $300,000 bonus. Burgos features a fastball clocked at 92-93 mph and works with four pitches including an above-average slider.
Philadelphia has seen success from its recent international signings. Eduardo Tait emerged as a Top 100 prospect before being traded to Minnesota last season; Aroon Escobar reached Double-A as a 20-year-old after joining in 2022; and current pitching prospects Jean Cabrera (No. 11), Wen-Hui Pan (No. 16), and Ramon Marquez (No. 26) have developed within the system.
International players can sign with Major League teams between January 15 and December 15 if they turn at least sixteen before signing and are seventeen before September of the following year.
The Philadelphia Phillies are one of Major League Baseball’s oldest franchises, originating in Philadelphia in the nineteenth century according to their official website. The team plays home games at Citizens Bank Park since its opening in 2004 and serves fans regionally and nationally. The club has won World Series titles in both 1980 and 2008 and continues engaging its audience through baseball activities.
