The Philadelphia Phillies have confirmed that Andrew Painter, their top prospect, will not be joining the team’s rotation before the All-Star break and will also miss the All-Star Futures Game scheduled for July 12 in Atlanta. Despite a recent setback with Mick Abel, Phillies manager Rob Thomson stated, “I don’t think so, no,” when asked about any potential changes to this plan.

Painter is currently ranked as the No. 1 prospect within the organization and No. 10 overall in baseball by MLB Pipeline. The team intends for him to rest during the All-Star break following his recovery from Tommy John surgery in 2023. He is set to make his 10th start for Triple-A Lehigh Valley soon.

While Painter will not participate, Single-A Clearwater catcher Eduardo Tait is expected to play in the Futures Game. Tait, at 18 years old, ranks as the Phillies’ No. 4 prospect and No. 63 in baseball overall. This season he has been batting .256 with 10 home runs and 42 RBIs over 291 plate appearances.

Tait expressed satisfaction with his performance via an interpreter: “I’ve liked my approach at the plate. I’ve liked what I’ve been doing in the field.” The Futures Game offers Tait a platform to display his skills before scouts from all major league teams.

With the Trade Deadline approaching on July 31, speculation arises around potential trades involving prospects like Tait as the Phillies aim to strengthen their roster for a postseason push. While Andrew Painter remains untouchable barring exceptional circumstances, other prospects could be considered in trade discussions.

Tait acknowledged areas of improvement: “At the plate, I’ve been looking for the fastball and focusing on the strike zone… But really my focus has been on my defense.” Although still developing defensively, he aims to enhance his blocking and pitch framing skills.

Tait remains realistic about his current standing: “It’s been a really solid start to the season so far,” recognizing he is not yet ready to succeed J.T. Realmuto should he leave as a free agent next season.
