There are eight days remaining until the July 31 MLB Trade Deadline, and the Philadelphia Phillies are expected to make strategic moves. Fans have been eager for insights into the team’s approach. On Wednesday afternoon, Todd Zolecki, MLB.com’s Phillies reporter, participated in a Reddit AMA to address these concerns.
When asked about the club’s priorities at the deadline, Zolecki suggested that acquiring a closer might be more critical than an outfielder. However, he noted that if prices are too steep, they might shift focus to enhancing their offense. “Really, they need both,” he stated. “I don’t know that I’d give up the entire farm system to do it.”
Regarding Gage Wood’s role with the team, Zolecki confirmed that Wood is projected as a starter. Despite speculation about his potential bullpen involvement this fall, there are no current plans for such a move.
As rumors circulate about the Phillies’ strategy at the deadline, Zolecki mentioned that they are actively seeking bullpen support. He emphasized the urgency due to impending free agency for key players like Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto: “They know it’s closing for their current core.” He also hinted at possible changes in left field involving Max Kepler and Justin Crawford.
The MLB Trade Deadline is set for July 31 at 6 p.m. ET.
