Zack Wheeler and Kyle Schwarber have been named to the National League All-Star team, marking their third career selections. The announcement came on a day when Wheeler delivered an impressive complete-game one-hitter against the Reds, striking out 12 batters. This performance strengthened his case for starting the Midsummer Classic on July 15 at Truist Park.
Wheeler’s potential starting role will be decided by NL manager Dave Roberts, with competition from Pirates ace Paul Skenes. Phillies manager Rob Thomson noted that both pitchers had “very similar first halves,” making the decision challenging.
Cristopher Sánchez and Ranger Suárez, who were All-Stars last year, were not selected this season. However, they could still be added as replacements closer to the game date.
Schwarber returns to the All-Star Game for the first time since 2022. He leads his team in several offensive categories, including home runs and RBIs. Schwarber expressed excitement about sharing this experience with his children, although he will not participate in this year’s Home Run Derby.
“It’s definitely something that’s not overlooked when you’re named an All-Star,” Schwarber said about his selection.
