PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Phillies secured a unique 3-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox in extra innings on Monday night, thanks to Edmundo Sosa’s walk-off moment. In an unusual turn of events, Sosa won the game in the 10th inning through a rare walk-off catcher’s interference.
Sosa had never experienced a walk-off win before, and this one did not unfold as he might have imagined. Instead of hitting a home run, his bat struck Boston catcher Carlos Narváez’s mitt on a 1-2 pitch with bases loaded. It marked the first walk-off catcher’s interference since August 1, 1971.
“To be honest, this just feels exactly like a home run,” Sosa said through the team’s interpreter.
The Phillies needed this win after losing three consecutive series and holding a record of 21-24 since May 29. “It’s strange,” Phillies ace Zack Wheeler commented. “People always say, ‘I’ve never seen that before on the baseball field.’ It’s just another one.”
Manager Rob Thomson noted two unusual events this season: “One is a walk-off inside-the-park home run, and a walk-off catcher’s interference.”
Pitcher Max Lazar helped secure the win by pitching a scoreless 10th inning. The Red Sox pitcher Jordan Hicks faced challenges in the bottom of the inning after walking Otto Kemp and advancing runners due to a wild pitch.
Sosa entered the game as a pinch-hitter for Bryson Stott against Aroldis Chapman earlier in the evening and singled during that at-bat. Facing Hicks again in the 10th inning, Sosa quickly fell behind but managed to defend his position.
Sosa requested a replay review after feeling contact with Narváez’s mitt during his swing attempt. The call was overturned upon review, ending the game in favor of Philadelphia.
“I don’t feel I was that close to the hitter,” Narváez remarked about his role in the play.
This marks another instance where unconventional plays have defined outcomes for both teams involved. Despite past successes with nine walk-off homers since Bryce Harper’s grand slam in August 2019, none were quite like Sosa’s recent achievement.
