In a recent development at Roxborough Memorial Hospital, a new pet therapy program has been introduced in collaboration with the non-profit organization Angel on a Leash. This initiative aims to enhance human health and quality of life through interactions between humans and dogs. Angel on a Leash has already established its presence in other city hospitals, such as Jefferson Health and St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.
The pilot program began in early 2025, spearheaded by Andrea Schapire and her therapy dog, Indiana Jones. Described as having a gentle disposition, Indiana Jones is trained to provide comfort and joy to patients and staff alike. During their initial visits, the pair encountered curiosity and skepticism but soon won over many with Indiana’s calming presence.
Patients experiencing pain or loneliness found solace in Indiana’s company, while healthcare providers noted an uplift in spirits during his visits. The official launch of the program coincided with Hospital Week in May 2025, where both patients and staff celebrated the benefits brought by this initiative.
As positive feedback accumulated, plans were made to expand the program by introducing more therapy dogs like Indiana. The aim is to further integrate pet therapy into the hospital environment, enhancing connections between patients and healthcare providers.
Angel on a Leash ensures that all handler-dog teams are tested, certified, registered, and insured during their visits. Meanwhile, Roxborough Memorial Hospital continues its commitment to comprehensive care as part of Prime Healthcare Services.
