Roxborough Memorial Hospital announced on April 3 that its podiatry team received second place in the Scientific Format category at the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) annual conference. Dr. Anushka Ramnani, a podiatry resident, presented research comparing approaches to popliteal nerve blocks, with attending physicians Dr. Larry Goss and Dr. Derick Waldner also recognized for their contributions.

The recognition highlights advances in clinical research and perioperative pain management within the hospital’s residency program. The ACFAS meeting is noted as the largest gathering of podiatric surgeons in the United States, attracting nearly 2,300 attendees and focusing on developments such as minimally invasive surgery and evidence-based care.

Dr. Ramnani’s poster examined different techniques for administering local anesthetic to the popliteal region during lower-extremity procedures. The study found that ultrasound guidance was more effective than other methods, suggesting potential benefits such as reduced opioid use after surgery and improved patient recovery outcomes.

Chief Podiatry Resident Dr. Catur Chan also presented two posters at the event: one reviewing necrotizing fasciitis cases in patients with HIV and diabetic foot infections, and another analyzing lead arthropathy of the ankle following gunshot wounds. These presentations underscore ongoing efforts by Roxborough Memorial Hospital clinicians to address complex conditions in podiatric medicine.

Shawn Parekh, CEO of Roxborough Memorial Hospital, said: “We are immensely proud of Dr. Ramnani, Dr. Goss, and Dr. Waldner for their remarkable contributions to perioperative pain management and clinical research. Their work exemplifies our institution’s commitment to clinical excellence, innovation, and patient-centered care. Recognition at a national forum like ACFAS underscores the caliber of our clinicians and the impactful work being accomplished at Roxborough Memorial Hospital. We also commend Dr. Chan for his dedication to advancing clinical knowledge in podiatric practice.”

Roxborough Memorial Hospital is a 146-bed community hospital serving Philadelphia communities since 1890.
