This season’s 11th edition of the Starting Pitcher Power Rankings highlights a notable achievement for left-handed pitchers, who occupy the top three spots for the first time this year. Lefties also make up four of the top five and half of the overall top ten in these rankings, which are compiled by MLB.com’s data team using a formula that weighs recent and season-long performance over the past 365 days.

Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers remains at number one for the sixth consecutive ranking since May 22. However, his hold on the top spot has weakened slightly as his ERA has risen from 2.02 to 3.68 over his last six starts. Despite this, Skubal still leads American League pitchers in several categories, including ERA (2.35), WHIP (0.86), and strikeout-to-walk ratio (8.9).

Cristopher Sánchez of the Philadelphia Phillies moves up to second place after not being featured on any top 100 prospect lists earlier in his career and posting a 5.47 ERA over his first two seasons with limited starts. Now considered a Cy Young Award candidate, Sánchez entered Wednesday’s game in Cincinnati with a 1.69 ERA over his previous twelve starts dating back to early June and holds a 3.02 ERA across the past three seasons.

Garrett Crochet of the Boston Red Sox is ranked third despite allowing five earned runs against Houston on Monday—only the third time he has done so this season. Crochet leads AL pitchers in innings pitched (152 1/3), batters faced (611), wins (13), and strikeouts (188).

Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates drops to fourth after struggling against Milwaukee but maintains strong numbers elsewhere with an ERA of 1.75 against all other opponents except for three starts versus Milwaukee.

Trevor Rogers enters at fifth following a challenging period marked by injuries and inconsistent results since his All-Star campaign in 2021 with Miami. After being traded to Baltimore and spending time in both Major League and Minor League assignments, Rogers returned mid-June and posted a league-best 1.44 ERA among pitchers with at least sixty innings before Wednesday’s start.

Nick Pivetta ranks sixth after joining San Diego as a free agent in February, helping stabilize their rotation amid injuries to other starters.

Bryan Woo sits seventh thanks to consistently pitching at least six innings per start while leading MLB with seventeen quality starts.

Matthew Boyd is eighth as he continues an impressive comeback season for Chicago despite some recent struggles.

Nathan Eovaldi debuts at ninth following several strong outings for Texas, including one-hit shutout performances that have nearly put him atop qualifying pitchers’ ERAs if not for insufficient innings pitched.

Zack Wheeler rounds out the top ten representing another Phillies pitcher vying for NL Cy Young consideration despite some recent challenges; Wheeler still maintains high strikeout totals and favorable advanced metrics compared to actual results.

Honorable mentions include Yoshinobu Yamamoto (Dodgers), Eury Pérez (Marlins), Hunter Brown (Astros), Luis Castillo (Mariners), George Kirby (Mariners), Nick Lodolo (Reds), Joe Ryan (Twins), Gavin Williams (Guardians), Brandon Woodruff (Brewers) and Cade Horton (Cubs).

Phillies fans may note that Cristopher Sánchez’s rise marks an important development for their pitching staff alongside Zack Wheeler’s continued presence among elite starters.
