PHILADELPHIA — Kyle Schwarber has been in the spotlight this week, despite not participating in the Home Run Derby. His performance in Tuesday’s All-Star Game swing-off earned him MVP honors, which he proudly displayed before Friday night’s game where he hit his 31st home run.
Saturday night brought more excitement at Citizens Bank Park when Schwarber hit a go-ahead grand slam, leading the Phillies to a 9-5 victory over the Angels. This marked his eighth career grand slam and fourth with the Phillies.
“It’s been a crazy week,” Schwarber commented on his recent achievements. The crowd showed their appreciation with “M-V-P” chants as he approached the plate.
“Just really enjoying a fanbase that cares about their team so much to want to win,” said Schwarber. Bryce Harper, who contributed with a two-run homer, praised Schwarber’s performance saying, “What a moment for him.”
Manager Rob Thomson also acknowledged Schwarber’s impact: “Thank God we got him because he’s really something.” With free agency looming for Schwarber at season’s end, his importance to the team is underscored by every notable play.
Schwarber joined an elite group of Phillies players by hitting 32 home runs within the team’s first 98 games of a season. He has accounted for nearly 30% of the Phillies’ total home runs this season.
“He’s been huge,” Thomson remarked. Harper echoed similar sentiments about Schwarber’s value to the team: “He’s our leader.”
Harper himself has been performing well despite earlier wrist issues, boasting impressive stats over recent games.
The future remains uncertain regarding contract negotiations for Schwarber, but he expressed hope to remain with Philadelphia. “You just want to feel like you’re pouring everything you have into your team,” he stated.
Harper added, “I can’t see him in any other uniform.”
