Kyle Schwarber will be the sole representative for the Philadelphia Phillies at the All-Star Game in Atlanta, following Zack Wheeler’s decision to opt out. Wheeler had a chance to start in his hometown but chose to focus on preparing for the second half of the season.
“I’d just rather get myself ready to go for the second half,” Wheeler said. He emphasized his priority is on winning the World Series with the Phillies.
The Phillies’ rotation, including Cristopher Sánchez and Ranger Suárez, has shown strong performances. However, neither Sánchez nor Suárez will participate in the All-Star Game due to scheduling and personal decisions.
Suárez stated through an interpreter, “That’s what’s best for us, for the team.”
Schwarber continues to be a key player for the Phillies, hitting his 30th home run of the season recently. This achievement makes him only the second player in Phillies history to reach 30 homers before the All-Star break.
Phillies manager Rob Thomson praised Schwarber’s approach at bat. “He’s changed his approach… it gives him a better chance against left-handed pitchers,” Thomson said.
As Schwarber approaches free agency along with teammates J.T. Realmuto and Suárez, there are significant decisions ahead for the franchise. Schwarber remains focused on contributing to his team’s success this season.
“I’m just here to pour everything I have into helping this team win,” Schwarber said regarding potential contract talks.
Despite being surprised by not having more teammates join him at the All-Star Game, Schwarber expressed gratitude for his team’s talent and potential.
“If they’re good enough, then name them an All-Star,” he commented about his teammates’ performances.
