Cheeseman’s Single Sends No. 6/9 Baseball to MAC Freedom Championship

Arcadia University Athletics issued the following announcement on May 9.

Connor Cheeseman's bases loaded single that ricocheted off second base brought home Nick Bon Tempo and sent the team into a frenzy as the No. 6/9 Arcadia University baseball team, the top seed in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) Championship, advanced to the Finals with a 3-2 win over No. 4 DeSales University at Skip Wilson Field on Monday afternoon.

The Knights improved to 36-7 with the best-of-three series win.

DeSales built an early 2-0 lead with a run in the top of the third and another in the top of the fifth.

Arcadia tied the score in the bottom of the sixth when Cheeseman led off with a single, moved to third on Zachary Sekelick's single to right center, and scored when Sekelick stole second and the catcher's throw was off target and got away from the fielder. Later in the inning, Matthew Sot pinch ran for Griffin Murphy, who reached on a fielder's choice, and stole second. After Ryan Smolen walked, Sot and Smolen pulled off not one, but two double steals including a straight steal of home by Sot to tie the game at two.

Bon Tempo led off the ninth with a single to center and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Madera. After Hunter Curley was intentionally walked to set up the double play, a wild pitch put the runners at second and third forcing another intentional walk of Justin Massielo to load the bases, leading to Cheeseman's walk off hit.

Owen Margolis, the reigning MAC Freedom Pitcher of the Week, tied the single-season record for wins by Joel Bartoni '19, improving to 9-0 with 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks with one strikeout.

Curley, Cheeseman, Sekelick, and Murphy each finished with two hits.

The Knights advance to the MAC Freedom Finals this weekend, where they will host No. 2 Misericordia after the Cougars knocked off Stevens with a 6-3 win on Monday. Arcadia won all three of its contests against Misericordia earlier in the season. First pitch on Friday will be at 3:30 p.m..
