WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Brendan F. Boyle (PA02) issued the following statement on Russia's illegal detention of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich. Evan’s parents are Boyle's constituents.

"It has been five weeks now that journalist Evan Gershkovich has been wrongfully detained by Russian authorities. To date, Russia has failed to present any convincing proof to support its concocted allegations. It is a bitter irony that on the same week that we celebrate World Press Freedom Day, we continue to see these types of despicable actions by governments around the world. The arrest of any journalist is a troubling violation of press freedom worldwide, as journalism is not an illegal activity. Today, the Kremlin not only holds Evan hostage, it continues to unjustly imprison Paul Whelan. Russia must release Evan and Paul now and ensure their safe return home to their family and friends.”
