The Philadelphia Phillies secured a 3-2 win over the Washington Nationals on Sunday at Citizens Bank Park, clinching a series victory. Ranger Suárez delivered a strong performance for the Phillies, striking out a career-high 11 batters over seven scoreless innings. This marks his second consecutive game with at least 10 strikeouts, following only two such outings in his previous 111 career starts.

Over his last two starts, Suárez has tallied 21 strikeouts without issuing a walk and allowed just two runs in nearly 14 innings pitched. The Phillies’ starting pitchers have combined for a 2.37 ERA and 46 strikeouts across their latest turn through the rotation. This stretch comes after losing Zack Wheeler for the season.

With the Nationals series complete, Philadelphia now prepares for an important three-game set against the New York Mets at Citi Field. The Phillies hold a seven-game lead over the Mets atop the National League East, matching their largest lead of the season. Both teams still have seven head-to-head games remaining this year.

Designated hitter Kyle Schwarber commented on the upcoming matchup: “There’s a lot of baseball to be played still, and we’ve still got a lot of games against them specifically,” Schwarber said. “We’re not going in there with a relaxed mindset or anything like that. We’re going there to take care of business.”

Schwarber also addressed recent challenges against New York: “Every time we walk out of the clubhouse, it’s kind of the same mindset — nothing is ever changing,” he said. “It doesn’t matter [if it’s a] home, road, exhibition game — we’re going there with the same mindset. We know what they’re capable of. We know they’re a good team.”

The Phillies have struggled recently at Citi Field, having been swept by New York in April and dropping seven straight games there dating back to last season’s playoffs.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson noted how quickly things can change: “It can go the other way, too,” he said. “So we’ve got to pay attention.”

Philadelphia has performed well recently, winning six of its past seven games and posting a 15-7 record so far in August. The Mets have gone 7-14 during that span.

Monday’s series opener will see Cristopher Sánchez (11-4, 2.46 ERA), considered an NL Cy Young candidate, face off against Mets right-hander Kodai Senga (7-5, 2.58). Tuesday’s pitching matchup features Jesús Luzardo (12-6, 4.10) versus Sean Manaea (1-2, 5.15), while Wednesday will pit Taijuan Walker (4-6, 3.44) against rookie Nolan McLean (2-0, 1.46 ERA).

Walker commented on preparing for these key matchups: “It’ll be a fun series. It’s always a fun series between us,” he said. “But you try to do too much, that’s when you start to get in trouble. So I’m just going to try to keep doing what I’m doing and not try to change anything.”

Walker also emphasized focusing on each game: “The goal is obviously just one game at a time and just try to win the series,” he said. “As long as we keep winning series, I think we’ll be in a good spot at the end of the year.”

The Phillies are entering an important part of their schedule with seventeen games ahead during a stretch where they play thirty-nine games in forty-one days—including upcoming series against division rivals and league-leading teams.

Thomson outlined what lies ahead: “Every game is big from here on out,” he said. “The Mets have a good club. We’ve got to go in and pay attention to every detail and play hard.”
